Patachitra art of Odisha

Patachitra is a traditional art form, here in this type of art cloth-based   scroll painting are produced by skilled workers of Odisha. This term patachitra comes from the Sanskrit language, in which the "Patta" literally means "cloth" and "Chitra" means "picture". Most of these paintings depict stories of Hindu God lord Krishna. Different stories of Lord Krishna are shown in the form of paintings. Not only the paintings of lord Krishna artist make many other paintings of other Hindu  lords like lord Jagannath, lord Vaishnav, lord Saiva  and many others.

As Indian peoples are very much religious and very much believes in Gods. So this thing can also reflect in their art forms. Many artist of India love to put Lord’s in their painting or arts. This patachitra art also comes under this category. Lord Jagannath, Lord Vaishnav and Lord Siva are those Hindu gods those people like very much so patachitra arts are like to made their paintings in so that they can sail these paintings in a good price.

The painting the 'patachitra' resemble the old murals of Odisha especially religious centers of Odisha, like Puri the place of lord jagannat, Konark and Bhubaneswar which was surrounded by temples. This region, dating back to the 5th century BC when this paintings are very much appreciated by all peoples not only in Odisha also British people like this art and transports these patachitra painjting from India to other counties . The best work of patachitra is found in and around Puri, especially in the Raghurajpur village. Here many skilled artists are present who maintaining their culture of patachitra making.

This old tradition of Odia painting still survives in the places like Puri, Raghurajpur, Paralakhemundi, Chikiti and Sonepur . There are some peoples or artists who are spending their whole life for this art. Even today in Odisha, these two crafts are combined in one and these artists and known as Chitrakaras, their title remains mostly Mohapatra or Maharana.
